Videotape is an oft overlooked audiovisual medium, yet it contains billions of hours of content worldwide! It is also degrading at a rapid rate, with many archival bodies, including the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives, projecting a complete loss of videotape playability due to tape degradation by 2025. Due to environmental threats and inherent medium instability, there is no time like the present to get your content off your tapes and onto a digital storage medium.
We currently offer videotape transfer services for the following formats:
VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS
MiniDV, HDV, DVCAM
Video8, Hi8, Digital 8
Betacam, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam
We will be adding other formats shortly.
We use professional grade, meticulously maintained videotape decks for tape playback. We utilize AJA Video Systems hardware to perform our transfers. We generate derivatives (eg. mezzanine files, access files) using the superb open source project ffmpeg. All transfers are closely monitored by a video preservation technician. This technician completes a transfer log for each project, detailing all elements of the transfer process. Quality control is performed via a number of open source programs developed by eminent members of the moving image archiving community.
